Sydney Airport Terminal 2

Published 15th February 2025

This $25 million upgrade of Terminal 2 at Sydney Airport focused on enhancing the current retail, food and beverage concept. Designed by Woodhead architects’ vertical circulation points and passenger flows have been re-organised to better integrate with the retail concept.

The terminal is a vital piece of infrastructure for the New South Wales tourism industry. The upgrade, driven by the growth in passenger numbers, also revised the retail, food and security areas with the new design enhancing operational efficiencies. The total retail area alone was increased from 1,000 sqm to 5,000 sqm.

Escalators have been relocated so that passengers move through the retail precinct en-route to lounges and concourse areas.

The retail precinct comprises a combination of shops, café’s, restaurants, and seating, which encourages travellers to extend their time in the retail zone resulting in an increase in passenger spending.

Working alongside the project team our experts undertook the mechanical, electrical, hydraulics and fire protection designs for this scheme.

The project won the ‘Tourism and Leisure Development’ and ‘Emerging Asset’ categories at the Excellence Awards 2008. These awards acknowledge that airports of today need to be flexible, allowing a variety of functional and revenue models to emerge over time.
