The redevelopment of Sydney’s largest brand outlet, Birkenhead Point Shopping Centre, saw the waterfront retail destination’s rich heritage respected as the multi-level glazed atrium entrance, mall refurbishment and two passenger lifts were overhauled.
Situated just six kilometres from Sydney’s CBD on the harbour’s edge, the centre features 160 stores, including premium outlet brands, positioned along the waterfront. Working in collaboration with Ignite Architects, our team supported the phased redevelopment of the 10,000 sqm shopping centre, with the scheme maximising the usage of previously unused floorspace within the centre.
As a site of heritage significance, the design approach was carefully considered to respect and preserve the historical character while introducing contemporary architectural elements.
A key architectural feature of the redevelopment was the central glass canopy, engineered to support year-round functionality and enhance the visitor experience. Acting as a unifying spine across the complex, the canopy delivers a comfortable alfresco environment for shopping and dining. It’s transparent, lightweight structure was developed in partnership between the architects and engineers to ensure it offers practical shelter, whilst enhancing visual impact.
