The project involved the refurbishment and transformation of three floors of the existing science building at the Waurn Ponds Campus in Geelong, Victoria. The refurbishment includes a major upgrade of all internal and infrastructure systems and incorporates teaching laboratories, classrooms, staff administration and both student and staff support areas.
As a crucial part of the design a courtyard, which covered three levels, was infilled as it was previously underutilised creating additional accommodation and opening up the space to natural light and views of surrounding greenery. The structure features a dramatic central light well, large glazed roof ridges and ceiling valleys which draw the light deep into the lower levels. The floorplan encourages a more flexible and free-flowing approach to working through the open collaborative spaces and short-term individual spaces which is a clear shift from the previous office set up.
We worked alongside H2O Architects on the design, documentation and construction phase services for all engineering disciplines including mechanical, electrical, fire protection and hydraulic services.
